Question S32=66? Huh?

Been getting some slow dial ups with earthlink lately. E-mailed them and tech support suggested that I add s32=66 to the extra settings of my modem...

Anyone know what that setting is for?

It disables the V.90 protocol. Usually, this is suggested when a modem has trouble connecting at the higher speeds (56K) and allows the modem to connect at lower speeds.

You may want to try and find newer drivers for your modem and see if that helps you out more.

Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the response. I would think that the v.90 protocol would speed things up and disabling it would only slow things down. I can connect ok, but it is very slow (even for dail up).

The slow dial up problem is our area in general....I have other friends in my neighborhood and they have the same problem.

If the modem on the other end doesn't support the V.90 protocol you wouldn't want to use it. Depending on how bad your lines really are I would probably limit it to V.34 connections and see how it runs then.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I have tried it with and without the extra setting, and I really can't tell any difference.

What modem do you have? I would see if there are some newer drivers available for it.

Modem is a US Robotics Voice Win Modem. The driver date is 5-16-98. Checked the Gateway website (its a gateway computer) and the US Robotics web site. According to the gateway site it's the latest driver.

Used the US Robotics modem ID wizard but couldn't find a modem to match the numbers I got from the ID wizard on the Us robotics web site....
