Fried processor?

I was working on an old machine, i had to put in a new cd writer. The machine is a P233 mhz, with some EDO and some other form of ram (2 diff type of ram were in there) it is a Omni Tech machine (brand name) and well after installing the new drive the cmoputer did not start. When i started the machine there were two beeps after all hardware was passed and the computer stood there.. i could go into the bios but nothing could get it further, i even tried a boot up disk but that didn't help. From what i read online two beeps at bios mean parity failure so i tried resetting the ram, i also made sure everything was secure and somehow managed to mess with the CPU. When i started the machine again i saw smoke and smelled burning.. not sure where it was coming from, i assumed it was the processor and when i tried taking out the heatsink the processor was fused to it... So that means that the processor is fried right? i have to put in a new one ? Just wondering if my assumptions are correct about the processor and the two beeps. Any help will be greatly apprecaited.
Thank you

Hi imademyfirstcomputer,

Some INTEL Pentium 233MHz processors had the heatsink/fan unit bonded to the CPU, so unless there was an actual clip holding the heatsink to the CPU and socket the CPU may not be ruined.

BUT, since you saw smoke and smelled something burning then something is obviously damaged.

Did you inspect the interior of the computer? Look for any burnt areas on the motherboard, RAM, video card and try smelling the power supply.

Are you sure there was two different types of RAM installed? You normally can't do that...won't work.

power supply smells bad

I suspect that the power supply is the thing thats causing the problem... because it smelled a littler wierd .. but i noticed not buring marks elsewhere. What do you suggest i do.? im pretty sure there are two diff types of RAMS too.. even if i replace the power supply what are my options after that? And what kind of power supply is needed to replace the old one? Thanks for your help again.

What brand and wattage is the power supply?

You should swap in another power supply to test with.

If your system turns on and runs okay with another power supply, then you don't have to do anything else. But if the system still doesn't power up, then you'll have to determine which other part is dead or defective.

You have to determine what kind of power supply you have now. The easiest thing to do is to remove the current power supply and take it down to a local computer shop and ask them for a replacement.

If you want to know what type of power supply it is, we have to know what kind of system you have now...is it a home built system or a store bought name brand?

When you look at the power connector for the motherboard, is it one piece of two? Is there a thick power cord going to the power switch from the power supply?

If the power supply has only 1 big motherboard power connector and no thick power cord going to the power switch, it's a ATX power supply.

If the power supply has two motherboard connectors and a thick power cable going to the power switch, it's a AT power supply.

Good luck.
