Hoo Hoo Hoo! Love my folks.

Just got a P4 3.06 and a Gainward Golden Sample GeForce 4 Ti4600, along with 256 MB of PC 2700 DDR.
Gift from my aunt......Late New Year, early B'day, call it what you will, but I am happy!

What I need is for you guys to recommend a mobo to go with this.

It must be ATX and support HT.

I already have a SB Live! 5.1 soundcard.

Any help?

BTW, the mobo has to be Asus or Intel. They are they only really good ones I can get hold of here in my hometown. There is also no real choice in towers, as Mercury are all that I can find.

Wow, you really scored! For Intel, go with one of the Intel 845PE boards, for Asus you want the P4PE (or one of its variants).

Thanks for the fast reply. What do your recommend for a Hard Drive? Samsung, Seagate or Western Digital? I have all three available here.

if you get a Western Digital Special Edition Caviar(or something like) with JB at the end of the part code it is a 7200rpm and has an 8MB buffer, its supposedly the fastest IDE drive in existence at the moment

I second the Western Digital 80GB+ "Special Edition" with 8MB cache, it's a great drive.

Avoid Samsung hard drives...they're terrible. I'm not sure if Seagate has improved their hard drive reliability problems yet, so you may want to avoid those too.

Most folks around here go with either WD or Maxtor.

Seagate supposedly has their act together now, but Samsung drives are definitely bottom of the barrel. You will probably have to go with Seagate if you choose a board with Serial ATA and want to use a Serial ATA hard drive - but for standard IDE it's hard to beat the Western Digital "JB" series.

Recommended boards with Serial ATA:
ASUS P4PE/R/L/SATA
Intel D845PEBT2

Recommended boards without Serial ATA:
Intel D845PESVL
ASUS P4PE/L

Lucky dog! All that stuff for your B'day? I have a Seagate HDD, and it's been going strong for over a year now.

My current HDD is a Seagate ST320413A 20GB tht has been running fine for around 1.5 years now, and WD are kind of hard to get out here. Vendor says three weeks, minimum.

Wow, India! That's a new place that I know of on this forum. Those parts you got for your birthday must have cost a fortune. Lucky guy!

Anyways, I just got a WD 80 Gig special edition - works great, no problems. Faster than what I had previously. If you can find one, I'd recommend one of the SE drives.
