For a complete build (cpu, mobo, sound, video, ram, drives, case and speakers), what chance is there of being shipped a faulty product (and being forced to pay $ to RMA it) and what is the chance of damaging a build?
*edit* It seems a large number of people of forums are RMAing bad stuff. Do these products only represent a minority (hope so) of all builds?

I've built about 20 computers and have never received a faulty part. Just lucky I guess. I do buy quality parts however.

Of all the orders I've gotten from MWave.com, Newegg.com and 2CoolTek over the past 4 years, I've gotten 1 bad CD-ROM drive and 1 bad hard drive. Not bad odds. RMA wasn't a problem either (both from Newegg.com).

Our shop used to do about 10 builds a day, every day, for months.
Of all the parts used, we RMA'd stuff to the supplier once a week, and the parcels were very small. The odd CPU, a CD-ROM, maybe a modem, or hard drive. I would think the failure rate of new parts is probably less than 1% overall. You hear about more RMA stuff on these boards, because people come here to determine if it's truly a bad part, or something they didn't do/did wrong, before sending it back. |

I've ordered a lot of stuff from NewEgg, and haven't had to RMA any of it, yet.

i hope it is that low, cos i have heard that sending faulty stuff back to dabs is a real pain in the arse, and have been told that they have the attitude that once you buy it off them its your problem kind of thing and my friend bought some RAM off them that didnt work in his computer and he still hasnt got his money back even though he sent it back to them the day he got it and tried it.

As long as you order quality parts built by reputible manufacturers (EG: Asus for motherboards) you should have very few problems, if any. I have done my build, plus done three upgrades, as well as another upgrade on my brother's computer. Everything for these was ordered online, and I have never had a problem.
I assume, from reading these forums, that Newegg and MWave handle RMAs excellently and efficiently. Don't let a few bad parts out there steer you away from building, or even worse, buying online. Buying online is almost always cheaper, even for monitors and cases which have high shipping costs.

I've ordered many things from Newegg of all different types - never had a problem with anything. However, I've only done one full build with little upgrades here and there.

I think the key here is in ordering quality parts. All companies will have a defective component from time to time. Dealing with quality parts lowers your odds of receiving a defective one.
Next step in equasion is where part is purchased. Again quality suppliers make the difference. Some (Newegg and Mwave for instance) make it easy to get a defective part replaced. Before buying parts, go to www.resellersratings.com and check out company. Chas

Of all the parts I've worked with over the past 8 years, I would guess that our RMA rate is somewhere around 5% DOA or in the first day and 10 more % within warranty.

Sometimes it just depends on your luck and who you order from. I didn't have a very good luck with www.essencompu.com
Heck, if it wasnt for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all. ![]() Since I work at a school, I see a lot of computers that come in every year. About 1 out of 25 seems to be faulty. Usually it's the motherboard.

This has been over 8 years - and 8 years ago the DOA rate was close to 30% on the crap the distributor we were using was peddling.
Not all of our customers want to pay for quality either. We've had to use cheap components to get a sale. |
