I have an Athlon XP 1800 that seems to be running a tad warm (up to 60 C, the case temp reads 38-40 C). I'm using the stock
heatsink/fan that came with it. I was wondering what alternative HS/Fans you would reccomend. The case has a front fan blowing in and a rear fan blowing out. I'm looking to add some more. Any thoughts on these also. Thanks Tony

I have never liked the retail HSF units, A thermaltake volcano 6cu+ or 7cu+ installed with Artic Silver will lower the temps at a reasonable cost. I use them on builds upto XP1900

Hi Tony Glass,
What motherboard are you using? ASUS motherboards tend to read the temps higher than others. Did you use thermal compound or a thermal pad? Is the heatsink installed properly? Is it sitting flat and level on the CPU? Is the recessed part of the heatsink bottom oriented over the raised part of the socket? If you want a better heatsink, take a look at the Thermalright SK-7 or SLK-800. Cricket

I've used the Arctic Silver and rechecked to see if the HS/Fan is seated correctly. Everything looks good. Just wanted to get the temps down and add some case fans. I should have all specs in my sig.
Any special case fans you guys use or are they all the same? Thanks Tony |

Just get good ball bearing fans from Sunon, YST, Vantec, Thermaltake, etc. I use Panaflo L1A's because they're quiet running but don't push as much air as some of the other fans available. Cricket

I have 2 case fans. But they are generic and don't seem to work well. At least they don't seem to blow the air very fast.
I did follow the instructions on the website for applying the Arctis Silver so it should be on correctly. I've been looking at case fans on the web and see that the specs tell of air flow and CFM. What is good for case fans? Thanks for all the help. Tony |

Check out coolerguys.com for your cooling needs! Check out the 80mm Mechatronics CPU fan. It's great I use it for my 1800+.

Similar System
I'm running a very similar system and have just started overclocking my processor so I have been KEENLY aware of my temps lately!
I'm clocked to 1729 right now and ASUS probe on my A7V333X reads my temps pretty consistently at 45C, and I am kind of suprised considering I only have two Antec 80MM fans. I think my temps may be lower than yours because I am nuts about round cables and airflow, using cable ties like no tomorrow to keep the case open. Also I have an aluminum case which really conducts that heat away. How is your cabling inside? I'd recommend checking that out before you put more fans in there. |

You can get some compressed air and try blowing out all the dust in the fans, and heatsinks. And if you are in the market for a new heatsink, the Zalmn copper HSF is one of the best money can buy for aircooling.
