Hi guys this one is for an assignment my son is doing. He has to list the parts required to upgrade a 486DX4-100 processor to a Celeron PPGA running at 500MHz.
I know it wouldn't be practical but this is what he has to do for part of his assignment. Thanks in advance for any replies on this one.

Having PcMech do the kid's homework for him?

For shame!

BTW, upgrade isn't really an issue with a 486 machine, power supply won't work, case will have to be replaced to fit an ATX mobo, etc. It'd really be building a new machine from scratch. Only thing you could maybe use would be the old ISA sound card and the floppy drive.

the hard drive and cd-rom drive also should work, depending on the vid card as to weather it would work or not.
there is a at style mb that would work in the existing case with the same power supply, so you may only have to replace the mother board and system ram if your are lucky, of course the cpu too.

Does he have to build a *working* pc, or a balenced pc?

You _can_ use the hard drive, cdrom and prolly video card, and they should work, but it would be muc slower then if you bought new parts.

Don't throw out the idea that the case is no good. While hard to find, there are AT motherboards that come in slot and socket design for the Celeron that will use an AT power supply. It probably would be best though to include the case just on the fact that the teacher might think you're full of it. Better yet, hand in the assignment with a dual upgrade path.

Or a tripple upgrade path. To a celeron 500, P3 700, and an Athlon 1Ghz.

Thanks guys. No Charliey, he doesn't have to actually build the thing, he just has to list the components he would need to do the upgrade. Yeah I know its a bit of a cheat Xayd but it beats me trying to think my brains out eh? he he he.
Thanks guys really appreciate your response.
