floppy disk controllers - one too many
I have a Gateway 400, running w2k that wants to boot an extra floppy drive controller everytime it boots. This knocks out the floppy drive, so you have to get rid of one of the controllers in device manager to be able to use the floppy. That's all fine and good, but the problem returns the next time you boot. Anything I can set in the registry to prevent this? Any other suggestions? thanks.

Hi theofile,
Welcome to PC Mech. At what point is the system wanting to load an extra floppy controller? In the first boot screen or when it's loading Windows? I would boot into Safe Mode and then go into Device Manager and check the floppy controller and see if there are duplicate or multiple instances of it. If there are, remove them all and reboot. Cricket

Toggle F8 or Press Ctrl ( depends on your comp ) during bootup
( just before , verifying DMI pool , message comes on ) Select Safe Mode . If that dos'nt work . In Windows , Start > Shut Down , select Restart in MS-Dos mode . At the DOS prompt , get to c:\> and the type in win.com /d:m & it will reboot to Safe Mode . http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/ho...,10060,00.html http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q180902 |

thanks. I think it loads the extra controller when it hits windows because it tells me that it's finished installing new devices and must restart the computer at the end of the boot.
Tried doing what you said in safe mode. Didn't work. |

I unistall both controllers. They both come back.
Don't know if this makes any difference, but the w2k is an upgrade from w98. |

If this problem only started when you upgraded to win2000 from 98 you may have to do a clean install of win2000. If everything is working and it does not bother you then live with it until such time you need to reformat.... |
