"scanning ide drives"

Hi, i have an A7V333 mobo and every time i boot up it spends about 30 seconds on "Scanning IDE Drives...................", which I know that a store bought PC does not have to do. I can't find anything in BIOS on turning that off. CAN I turn it off? I don't use raid or anythihng like that either.

What are you running for anti-virus software? This could be a boot up virus scan.

well this came during my first boot up of the computer also, without any os installed. In the bios it has a choice for virusscan but i got rid of that and it still checked for the drives.

Do you a Quick Boot option to enable/disable in your BIOS?

Was looking for a little more detail on how many and what kind of drives you have and how they are currently connected, but anyways if you mean the BIOS detects the drives then yes they all do that. 1 other thing that comes to mind is to go to the first page that comes up in the BIOS, where the ide drive configuration is and set any of the ones you do not have a drive connected to as none. Then it won't try to detect a drive where you have none. Leave the ones you do have as auto and if it has a drive detection, then do that and leave them set there. (ie. if you don't have a slave drive on the primary IDE channel, set primary slave to none)

i use quickboot to get rid of the memory scan and such, but after the post and all that it goes to a blank new screen and says scanning ide drives. and adds a "." every second for 30 seconds about. Ive done quickboot and disable all other things and such and none works. Should i flash the bios? Im afraid to do that because i dont understand the instructions in asus, could someone here help me?

Now that you mention when this is happening, (after POST and BIOS load), it sounds more like a virus scan type thing, or some kind of scandisk that is set to run at boot.
What OS are you using??

i use 2000, but ive used 98 and xp for other computers made with this board. I think i ned to flash the bios to get that option to disable it. Its before all the OS loading so it shouldn't have to do with that.

Flashing BIOS is done via boot floppy. You need the asus flash utility and the new bios image file, that you downloaded. The flash utility should have came on the cdrom with the MOBO. Disable the power saving in the BIOS first, and back up your BIOS to a file.

If the board has a RAID controller and you are not using it for RAID, you have to switch it to a standard IDE controller using a jumper or in the BIOS if you ARE using it as a standard IDE controller - or disable it if nothing is connected to it.

I think your onto something there GLC. Your board does show RAID onboard at the asus website.

Should tell you in the motherboard manual what your options are.

aha! There was a jumper to use raid and ide or a jumper to just use ide. Now my load time is cut down to 10 seconds, thx guys. Also, im gonna build a comp for my sister, shes goin to college, but when i buy the parts i can keep some of the new ones and give her some of mine. I was thinking of getting a A7N8X mobo and switchin that with mine, i heard its better. Would that be a good choice?
