I booted up my computer this morning and I got No PT please insert disk. I tried everything. Nothing! I wanted to see if it was the hardrive, so I put my son's hardrive in and bingo it booted.
I then put my hardrive in my son's computer as a slave drive and I could access the whole drive. I then thought while i'm here I'll go ahead and format and start from scratch. I put a fresh copy of XP on it and it worked like a charm. I could boot from my hardrive or from my son's hardrive on his computer. I then put my hardrive back in my computer and it gave me the same message. Why would my son's hardrive work on my computer and mine won't. It boots up so fast that it does not give me time to hit f8. The only thing I can get into is hit delete to get into setup, which doesn't do any good. My hardrive seems like it works alright, and my motherboard lets my son's hardrive boot up. What could it be? I sure would appreciate any help on this matter. |

I am guessing you have a bad cable or the IDE controller it is on has gone bad. You might try switching it to other one.

I agree with Tuf. I don't think that the problem lies with the harddrive. The harddrive controller integrated on the motherboard may have malfunctioned or the ide cable is bad. Try replacing the ide cable and if that does not work try getting another motherboard.

Never mind. Since your son's harddrive works with your computer then the harddrive controller could be fine. But then your harddrive works with his computer but not yours. Try another ide cable. If that does not work then I am not really sure what the problem is. Try going to the cmos setup and make sure the bios detects your harddrive and all the parameters are correct. It also could be some type of virus of some sort.

Apparently he was putting his son's drive on the other channel when it was is in his computer. He emailed me and said it was his mobo. He is going to add a PCI controller card to make up for the missing channel.

Tried new HDD cable and that didn't work. Apparently you have to be up and running to put a IDE controller in a PCI slot. I still get the same message "NO PT insert disk press a key. Any help would sure be appreciated.

Do a virus scann on your son's hard drive as it could have got a virus that is starting to re-program stuff.

I ran updated Mcafee on my son's computer and there were no virus's detected. Before my computer blew up on me Sat. I had
run the same scan before I defragged. So I have pretty much thrown out any virus. I e-mailed ASUS about my mobo. but they are taking Chinese New Year from Jan.31-Feb.5 LOL. I'm going to put my son's HDD back in mine to see if I can get to f8 and take it from there. I don't know what else I can do. Any help would be appreciated. |

Hi Smoothresult,
"No PT please insert disk."...is that the exact error message you're getting? What does "PT" stand for? Is this a name brand PC or a home built? What are your system specs...name and model of the parts if you know them. Is there any other drive on the primary IDE channel? Cricket

Don't know what PT stands for. Here's my specs. Asus A7A266 mobo,1.33GHZ AMD Athlon,768MB SDRam,1-Maxtor 80Gig HDD Primary,1-Maxtor 40Gig HDD Slave mirrored no os. 12X Creative DVD rom, Plextor 24/10/40 CDRW, in a Simbadda case. Built it myself. Anyway, I put my HDD back in my son's computer for a last shot to see if it was the HDD. I went to Maxtors website and downloaded the test software called powerquest, and ran it on my HDD and it passed everything. So, I rebooted and it came up boot disk error, insert system disk. I put in XP Pro, loaded it and off I went. It's been fine ever since. That's the weirdest thing I have ever seen. I always have the weirdest things happen to me and computers. My friends have a lot more knowledge than me on computers, and it seems every time I have a problem like this, they always tell me that they have never heard of anything like that before. LOL I never have the luck. Again I appreciate all the help! |

Glad it worked out!
But no you can't put a controller card, or any card in with the computer running! You do have to install the drivers for it when you are installling the OS or before install the card and move the cable on a current working install. |
