HP Scanner problem

I'm running Win 2ooo SP3 with scanjet 5470c USB connection. I use OmniPage & the HP software for scanning.
A recent glitch has appeared. In the middle of a scan, I get a message saying the scanner is in use, or that it cannot initialise.
The scan stops where it is - light on, middle of the page. It happens with both software packages, not every time, but often enough. The butons on the scanner don't respons either. Switching power on and off cures the problem for a time.

Should I reinstall my software. i suppose it could be a problem with the TWAIN. But I wonder if there's a glitch on the scanner which has those useful buttons (which i never use) for faxing etc, and one of them is preempting for some reason.

It's hard to say but I would try uninstalling the software and driver and then reinstalling them. You should check to see if they are any updates available.
