Motherboard Fans

I need to replace a dying fan. The problem is I'm not sure what size (mm) it is. It is on an Epox 8KHA+. It is the small fan on the VIA chip, not the CPU fan. Any ideas on the size of this baby? I'm thinking that it is probably a 40mm, but not sure. I don't live anywhere near a store where I can purchase, thus my purchases are all online. Just need a little help on what to order.

thanks
Jim

www.thermalthake.com

There you can find chipset HSFs.

Just wondering, do you really need a chipset fan? I know some mobos ship with them and some ship without them. Just wondering if they are really even necessary.

They are good if you do a lot of gaming. But for normal operation, you don't really need them. I don't have a Chipset HSF and I do gaming and normal operation. I guess it all depends on your system setup and what you do with your computer.

Newer chipsets run hotter than the previous ones.

If your mobo came with a fan, it *is* necessary, so replace it. Don't gamble with heat.

It'll be either a 40mm or 50mm fan. To be sure, take the one on the chipset heatsink off and measure it.

Thanks for all the replies. I will definately replace it. I didn't realize that I might be able to run without it. The motherboard came with the fan, so I'll be sure to replace instead of go without. I'll check out thermaltake.com

Thanks

I would avoid a fan all together. If the fan died on this board, the next fan you get is likely to die eventually as well. I have the same motherboard, and my chipset fan died a few months ago. I picked up a Zalman passive heatsink, that has no fan. I applied some Arctic Silver to the chip, placed the heatsink on it, and no problems whatsoever. Chipsets dont run hot enough to warrant the need for a fan. Heres the unit I picked up: http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/vid-12.html

Alaron56.
Thanks for the idea... How did you fasten it to the chip, besides the thermal grease? I see that it comes with some hardware.
Components:
-One ZM-NB32J Heatsink
-One Supply of Thermal Grease
-Two Thermal Adhesives(A, B)
-Bolts/Nuts/Links/Push Pins/Tapered Springs (Two Each)

Thanks for the help
Jim

All fans will eventually die but a decent quality one will last a long time. If the manufacturer put a fan on it they did so for a reason. Some of the passive heatsinks work fime if you have enough airflow through the case. If not they aren't any better than no heatsink or fan at all.

Pretty expensive gamble to take, I'd would just put a fan on it and be done with it.

I have the same board and fan died couple of months ago. How did you get the current HS off in order to install the new one?
