I need all my data from the computer im on now "family" to the one i will be building ...i cant network them since the other other computerwill be upstairs and i cant share a cable modem since my isp that supplied them doesnt support that for home users so im going around the networking option...also mom has a hands off rule when it comes to hardware on this computer....should i buy a external cd-rw? or external dvd-r/rw (read the ups and downs to dvd-rws in other threads) i know external is more $$ then internal but i see no other way of transfering data....

After the new computer is built and running well, take the hard drive out of the older computer and slave it to the hard drive in the new computer. Make sure the BIOS recognizes the older hard drive (jumper set correctly, etc...). Once you boot up and are in Windows, you can use Windows Explorer to transfer the files from the old hard drive to the new one. Once the transfer is done, remove the old hard drive and return it to the older computer.

that was my other option that was killed since im under a "hands off hardware" policy i cant touch anything within this computer the case stays shut

just because the isp says they don't support that, only mens that they will not give you tech support for the router,

I belive that you will have no problem setting up a home lan with you cabel modem by just adding a router with a switching hub built in.

just need a nic in each computer and the router and some cat5 cable.

if both systems have a nic, you could also just use a crossover cable to connect them both together, and move all the files you want.

yeah a friend of mine told me that idea...i would still need to put a network card in this computer but is their anyother way to haev a network without installing a card?

Let me guess - the cable modem is USB? There are no USB routers available in the US. If this is the case, get 2 wireless USB network adapters, plug them into each machine, and set them up in "ad hoc" (peer to peer) mode. Use Internet Connection Sharing to share the cable modem.

If the cable modem is plugged into an existing internal network adapter, then you can use a router - get one like the Linksys BEFW11S4 that has both switch ports and a wireless unit, plug the cable modem into it, plug it into the network adapter, and get a USB wireless network adapter for the other computer.

yeah usb...i think ill go with that since not much is done to either computer except the transferring...and hook-up\
