i lost disk capicity after doing a zero fill, fdisk and format

now i'm really confused. i have a used hard drive, a western digital caviar 307AA, it's listed as a 30.7 gb in the lable and it's property's showed 28.6 gb. well i can live with that. os i zero filled the drive, (to erase the drive) fdisked, set the 1 partition active, formated it, scan disked it, and defraged the drive and now, when i slave it into my dell dimension 133p, running win 98 2nd, it's capicity is now 7.82gb. both drives are reconized, master is c drive, slave is d drive. i'v read that formating the drive doesn't remove all data and that's why i was recomended to zero fill the drive. i downloaded the western digital's, program data life guard v.10.0, to perform the zero fill and i also tested the drive and it check's out ok. any one have any input to my situation. tks sling

Not sure, but if that computer is old enough, the BIOS may not be able to recognize a drive that large. They'll only recognize up to like 8gig if I remember right. Might need a BIOS update though. Like I said, I'm not totally sure so you might wanta wait and see what some of the others have to say.

My guess is the Dell can only see that much. If it were put into a newer system, it would be fully recognized.
