Jumper question
Hi guys,
I am building my first computer and i read somewhere that before i install the hardrive i must set the jumpers to master. well i found the jumper on the hardrive now can anybody tell me how to set it? or how to tell if it is already set. and if anybody has any other advice they would like to share before i mess something up please feel free to tell me. thanks |

Depends on which IDE cable you're using. If it's a 80 wire UltraATA IDE cable, set the hard drive jumper to CS or CSel (cable select). Blue connector goes to the motherboard, black connector to the drive you want as master and grey connector to the drive you want as slave.
If you're using a 40 wire ATA IDE cable, set the hard drive jumper to master (or if you're using a Western Digital hard drive, remove the jumper completely if it's the only drive on the IDE cable). Position on the IDE cable doesn't matter. Cricket

Some hard drives have the jumper setting on the hard drive? Does yours? Did your come with any documentation?
Just take out the pins and follow the chart that is on your hard drive if you have one on there. I use some small pliers to remove mine. It’s very simple. |

it is a western digital hardrive. i'm still confused though. there are two tiny metal circles and on the right of them says master
and another says slave and another is blank and another says "cs" and another says "pm2" please reply i am really confused |

oh so i just remove the ones by master? and then it is set to master?

Read my previous post...it depends on the type of IDE cable you're using. A 80 wire IDE cable will have 3 different colored connectors and the surface texture of the ribbon is fine. A 40 wire IDE cable will have a rougher surface texture and the connectors will all be the same color.

one more question.. which way do i install the hd? with the chart on top? or on the bottom?

new jumper question
thanks for your help guys.. i got the jumper set on my hard drive. now i am trying to set the jumpers on my cd rom drive. i only have one cd rom drive. it is an asus 52x drive. i am pretty sure i should set it to master. correct me if i'm wrong. well there is a small blue thing covering two of the pins under "slave," "cable select" and "master" dont have a blue thing covering there two pins.

thanks cricket.. well i just realized i was in fact using an 80 wire UltraATA IDE cable for my hardrive. if i only have one hardrive though do i just leave the gray connecter unconnected?

ok i have all of the ribbon cables connected.. should i keep my hard drive set on master or cable select if i am using an 80 wire UltraATA IDE? and do i just leave the ribbon cables all over my case are is there a way to tuck them somewhere so they wont be in the way?
