Transferring of OS to new HD??

Hi Guys,

I have old HDD 6.5g with W2K OS and some important programs for me. Today, I bought new 40g and I formatted into two partition.

What I want to know from your expertise is If there is a way to copy the whole contents of my old HDD to the new one (including OS and all programs) and restart the system into new HDD
without re-installing from scratch.

Please let me know. thanks for your help.

Norton Ghost will do it. I just did basically the same thing. I copied HD to CD and then copied to another HD just to test for backup purposes. It also has a disk to disk function.
www.directdeals.com has Norton Ghost 2002 which is what I used for $16.00 if you don't have Ghost. Drive Image should also work although I've never used it.

A better and cheaper program is Powerquest Drive copy. basically you install it on the computer connect both drives, the while still in Windows open the program and setup what you are going to copy and click finish. The program will restart the computer into DOS and copy the drive, then restart. After that you shutdown change the drive jumpers and cable positions as required then restart on the new drive.
If you want to spend a few more bucks than Ghost, get Drive Image 2002, it is superior to Ghost, both in ease of use, options, and emergency recovery.

Just use the disk that came with the drive or download the Data Lifeguard Tools from WD.


Drive Image is a great app too.

Data Lifeguard Tools only works if one of the drives is a WD - but most hard drive manufacturers have a similar utility.
