PIII Running temps

G'day all.

I am running a PIII 800EB CPU on an Abit VH6-II Mobo and was wondering if my temps are fine.

Just using a standard HS/F and an exhust fan it runs @ 34-35°C and under load 44-45°C

But when it reaches 45+°C it becomes unstable(Random errors), it is a second hand CPU so maybe it has been damaged by heat before or something.

What could I do too cool it down some more?

Remove the HS/F, scrape off the thermal pad with a plastic (not metal) tool, clean the heatsink and CPU core thoroughly with alcohol, and remount it with a premium compound like Arctic Silver or Antec Preference. Preparation and application instructions are at www.arcticsilver.com .

I don't know why it gets unstable at such a low temp - P3's should go to at least 60 without even breaking a sweat. I wonder if the Via chipset is causing instabilities?

A stock or generic heatsink is all a P3 needs. The EB processors are not good overclockers at all, they are already running on a 133 bus.

I think it may well be the VIA chipset.

Did a poor mans upgrade from a P3 500 Slot 1 to a P3 FC-PGA 800EB, I did a fdisk/format re-install of windows two days ago after I had swap motherboards over. and was getting random program crashes but no errors.

Now I get errors and I monitor the CPUs temp, the case temp never goes over 25°C and I know P3's are rated to be stable at 65+°C but if it gets that hot something is wrong

I don't know if the chip has been overclocked it is a second hand chip.

BTW I did go and get VIA's 4n1 drivers for the m/b

Another thought - have you tried better ram? If you arent running a decent brand PC133 this might be an issue.
