Need some AT motherboard advice QUICK PLZ!!
Thank you in advance to all who respond!!
Ok I have a HOT-507(v1.5) AT Motherboard in a system im trying to repair. I downloaded the manual and have all the settings I need for the motherboard it runs great but heres the problem now. Yesterday I hooked up some external USB ports on the motherboard *( Yes it handles pnp and usb expansion)* and went to reboot the system but it does the ram count now and stops at error "Keyboard not found or not detected" Now why has that happened? I cant get into my system now in any way shape or form which means I cannot even set up the usb ports so I can use a USB keyboard. I didnt even come close to the din5 connector or short anything out so I have no clue what is wrong. IF ANYONE can help plz respond ASAP. Every little thought helps..... Possibly the usb set to default and now the din5 wont register or what? I tried resetting the cmos (BAD IDEA) because now I cant get into the system to reset the cmos settings because I have no keyboard access lol ....... I NEED HELP PLZ PLZ PLZ and QUICK lol Is there someway to hit a jumper and reset all the default hardware? |

First, uninstall external USB if you haven't already done so. There is a cmos reset jumper on that board that should be identified in the manual. You can also reset the cmos by removing the battery for a few minutes. Try that and see if the system comes back up.
btw, I had a Shuttle HOT 569 board (worked great) but I could never get a USB hook-up to work on that board.

No, that just clears the cmos and sets it back to defaults. Remove the USB adapter from the header - if you hooked it up wrong that can cause exactly what you describe.

Clear the bios via the jumper then.
Some AT boards used a different type of battery,it's a little black rectangular thing, might say dallas on it,it can be replaced, but involves soldering in many cases,so just find the jumpers leave them in the clear position for awhile and then reset to the original setting and the bios will be cleared, you may want to disable usb keyboard support and use a standard keyboard until the usb is fully set up,what OS are you using? |

Im using windows 98se in this system right now. Here is another thing tho thats happening. I tried to use a different din5 keyboard but when I boot the system it gives me the beeping keyboard error over and over and over but if I use the one that came with the system it doesnt beep it just registers as undetected. The keyboard lights also are very very dim but still there so does that mean anything important?
Also, I dont think i want to be clearing the bios do I? Dont you then have to flash it to get the bios back? Well to flash it Id have to be able to use keyboard and also be able to get past the harddrive detection but since I cleared the bios I get just past the hd detection and then it says Cmos Checksum error- Defaults loaded Then it gives me the option to hit delete to set up cmos and stuff but I have no way of getting i to set it up lol. |

No. As has been said twice, clearing the CMOS only sets it back to defaults and does NOT require a bios flash.
Now with what you describe - it sounds more to me like your keyboard bios (which is separate from the system bios) is fried - or you have a Dallas-chip type real time clock - which contains the battery - and it's dead. Either way, the motherboard is scrap, you can buy a good used replacement motherboard for less than the price of a replacement Dallas chip and you will never be able to find a replacement keyboard bios much less change it - it's soldered in. Have you removed the USB adapter yet? If not, please do so and see where you stand - I've personally seen those things short out a motherboard if installed incorrectly. Do not overlook the possibility that the power supply is going south. Last edited by glc; 03-05-2003 at 04:02 PM. |
