Send a message via ICQ to RJ
Question Problem ?

Sorry, but I don't understand your problem. If you buy a new modem, then there will be drivers with it.

I need a site where I can download a basic driver that
will work with any 14.4 modem . Was trying to be humorous
about buying a new modem cause everyone would be be saying what the heck would anyone want with a 14.4 modem.
Just want to get her going with the 14.4 for now.
Thanks.

No such thing as a generic driver.
What chipset is on that?
Do you have an FCC ID#?

This just means he missed the garbage can when he threw it out.

You can find a generic "standard 14400 modem" driver in Win95. Your resources are out of whack - it's using the I/O address for Com 4 and the IRQ for a sound card. Best thing to do is disable Com 2 in CMOS and rejumper the modem for Com 2 IRQ 3 if it has jumpers. If it's jumperless, remove all com ports in device manager and disable Com 2 in CMOS and restart - it should reinstall properly.

Carl: I am yet to crow and maybe loudly! )

glc: Turns out the only modem listed was a 14.4 but the actual card in the slot is a 56. See copy of my email to manufacturers (Best Data) support.
( Problem now is the dloaded driver is not acceptable to the installation wizard)

" I positively identified the modem from windrivers.com site by a photograph and chip # , and downloaded driver for 56FW-PCI Data/Fax . I printed off and followed all your instructions even into the dreaded REGEDIT.
Windows 95s installation Wizard keeps giving me ' file not found on installation disc.'
I extracted your zipped file into a temp folder and then into a diskette A:\ but it will not read it.
Also tried copying it into C:\WINDOWS\system and directed the wizard to look there - still no go.
Tried downloading another , 2nd copy but that didn't work.
Any ideas??
PS. Tested the modem in C.Panel\Modem\Diagnostics and got ATI 15 error, ATI 16 error, AT17 error.
The other ATI s had data beside the numbers.

Thanks ! "

Get the ATi3 response (or the chipset #'s) and go try my modems page.

Reboot: dloaded 2 different versions from your site and both are rejected by the wizard-same message: 'selected location does not contain an updated driver for your device'.
Only clue is when you hit modem properties 'cannot read port name from registry'

I give up - 90% of the problems I've had with computers has
been with modems. Worse back when with 9.6 bps ones, Win 3.1 and Mosaic browser but they still drive you #@&%!! insane.
Please don't waste anymore time replying to this. I'm out to buy a new one and start from scratch.
Got some good belly laughs from your warnings to innocent visitors to your web site. I am going to post something
suggesting that PCMechanic put some tutorials on the site
to save a lot of your time. The ones on Sharky are too simple\basic.
Thanks.
