i cant login to XP now that i installed win 2000
heres my scenario:
i have a duel HD system, my primary HD has win XP and until tonight my secondary was just backup (mp3s and such). tonight i installed windows 2000 and service pack 3 for it. win 2000 loads up with some errors, but nothing that seems too serious. when the computer first boots up, it gives me the choices of win 2000 or win xp. when i select xp, it instead uses that little loading bar 2000 uses, and reports this message: "Windows2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corupt: \windows\system32\config\systemd You can attempt to repair this file by sarting windows 2000 Setup using the original floppy disc or CD rom Select 'r' at the first screen to repair " I cant figure out why its giving me this message when Im trying to load XP. im thinking maybe 2000 conflicted with XP when trying to become the 'master' OS, and messed up the boot sector. i tried going into safe mode but no luck. my last resort will to load up win 2000, backup all my files from my XP hard drive, but i really dont want to resort to that. if any one can help please reply, i want to get rid of this problem as soon as possible. thanks edit: nevermind,i reinstalled winxp and its working now

that is a given, not a suggestion,
w200 must be install first on the c drive and xp must be installed second on the d drive for it to dual boot |

Hi proxy,
Because you installed W2K after XP, you need to repair the XP Boot loader. This method is attributed to Doug Knox. "Boot your computer with the Windows XP CD. When prompted to Setup or Repair, choose Repair. In the Recovery Console, enter the following commands. FIXBOOT, answer Yes CD \ ATTRIB -H NTLDR ATTRIB -S NTLDR ATTRIB -R NTLDR ATTRIB -H NTDETECT.COM ATTRIB -S NTDETECT.COM ATTRIB -R NTDETECT.COM COPY X:\I386\NTLDR C:\ COPY X:\I386\NTDETECT.COM C:\ In Steps 9 and 10, X is the letter of your CD-Rom drive." and even repair the bootloading won't always fix the problem. you may have to reinstall xp altogether.
