Try going with an Asus P4B533-VM for $101.99 It has integrated sound, VGA, and LAN (Ethernet). If the video is not good enough get him a video card for Christmas. While it has integrated video it also has an empty (vga) video card Slot. He may need some extra stuff if he takes some courses for multimedia like a TV/FM tuner card that can import graphics. I saw some nice smaller cases make by Chieftec that sold for $30 without the power supply at www.newegg.com. Add a $30.00, 300 watt enermax power supply and that should do oK. Still need a Boxed intel Processor (Retail). The retail Intel Processor come with a good stock cooler that is pretty good. Then I suggest 512 Megs of memory from www.crucial.com. He will need a new OS like WinXP Home edition (90.00).
I recommend buying the parts all together in the summer. It is rumored that New Intel Chipsets are coming out in May of this year. So the newer motherboard prices may drop between now and then. For instance an Asus Granite Bay chipset motherboard is running at least $140.00 right now, and $200.00 for the deluxe motherboard. If new motherboards come out, then the price may drop quite a bit. Computer parts are very time sensitive. I have seen some nice LCD monitors in the 15 inch size that have TV tuners for less than $400.00. This is one way to go. Alternatively a person could buy a 19 inch monitor for less than $200.00 or so and have up to $200.00 for a nice video card. I would go for the Large Monitor and an Asus TI4200 video card. The video card could be added later if you go with a motherboard with integrated video. It is between the 2 of you if he needs a CDROM that can double as a CDR and also read DVD's. Also he might need a floppy drive if he has to have portable media. Then there is the speaker thing. That depends on the budget. Speakers go from $5.00 to $200 depending on the quality. For under $30 you can get a fairly decent pair of stereo speakers. For $99 a 5.1 sound system can be purchased. I am betting room will be at a minimum if he has to stay in a dorm. |
