I have a Abit Be6 (NOT II) mobo. and I was wondering if I can put a new Cel. II in there and have it work. I bet this has been talked about a lot here, but I couldn't find any threads. Will I need any convertors or anything? I'm kinda new at the new types of processors. And, have any of you guys (or gals) heard of the Golden orb cooler. I've heard some good reviews, but I would like to hear what you think. I plan on overclocking it to 945 mhz. (9*105) or at least 900 mhz. Thanks in advance.
P.S. I also have the newest BIOS for it too. ------------------ "I've got thirteen channels of $hit on the T.V. to choose from." - Pink Floyd |

I've been to overclockers.com to make sure I would get the best bang for my buck, but nobody listed if they used a convertor(sp?) or not. I just want to know if I can plug a new cel. 2 into my BE-6 without anything else, like a convertor (sp?) Thanks for the reply.

You will have to get the latest BIOS version, but then your board will take the new Celerons.

Hi! I am not very familiar with the ABIT boards (I use SOYO myself 6BA+IV) but I think that the one you are talking about the BE6 is a 370 PPGA board right!? Well if that is the case I would venture to say that the pin-out of the old 370 PPGA sockets is incompatible with the new 370 FC-PGA. If I remember it correctly the pins of the FC-PGA are arranged in a different way than those of the PPGA. My speculations stream from the logic that if the old PPGA-style Slot1 to Socket 370 converters do not accept a new Coppermine FC-PGA chip then neither will the motherboards with the old PPGA Sockets, but it also could be that the old converter cards just had too much voltage for the Coppermines which are 1.5v be default. However I may be wrong so don't quote me on this! I would suggest you asking people like TOASTER he ought to know for sure! Hope this helps a little in the decision making! Leo.

Ok, I have the newest BIOS for the mobo. and it has a slot 1, so the new cel. 2 can fit in there.(?) I'm getting pretty confused. Please Toaster or someone tell me something I can quote with.
I think HAL is correct but like I said, I'm still confused.------------------ "I've got thirteen channels of $hit on the T.V. to choose from." - Pink Floyd |

Being a slot 1, you will need a slotket to install the Celeron since they now only come in socket 370 format. Then it's just a matter of installing the CPU into the slotket, attach the heat sink and fan, slide the slotket into the slot1.

I have tried out the Golden Orb Cooler, it's priced well and cooling is comparable to the Alpha heatsinks/fan combo. It's great
You can get it here http://www.plycon.com/

Thanks for the link, Omletteboy. Say, did you have trouble installing it to the CPU? That is the only problem I've heard of with the orb. Thanks.

It was a little trickey to pop it on the cpu cuz of the retention mechanism, other than it works great.
Should be excellent for the new celeron's flip chip. As to a slotket I have used the MSI slotket. It for coppermines, but I'm not sure how high the multiplier goes, check it out http://www.msicomputer.com/products/...?ProductID=116 |

Hey guys,
Is the new Cely II the one they refer to as the "flip chip"? I'm not up to date on the latest Intel chips. ------------------ "To speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves" |

Yup, the new Celerons are a flip chip package. There is a 533Mhz PPGA, then the 533A which is in the flip chip package. The 566Mhz and higher are flip chips.

Sorry for the basic question:
What's the difference between the ppga and the flip chip? ------------------ "To speak ill of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves" |

PPGA (plastic pin grid array) are the ones that are a black plastic casing and have an aluminum plate bonded to the top of the silicon.
FC-PGA (flip chip pin grid array) are a green fiberglass casing and the silicon of the CPU is exposed and in direct contact with the heat sink. The coppermine CPU's and the Celeron II's are in FC-PGA form. The Slot one coppermines are also in a flip chip in the sense that the silicon is in direct contact with the heat sink. ------------------ If it ain't broke, you're not pushing hard enough! |

When you buy the Orb, spend the $10 and get the copper shim. I bought a 566, and forgot to get the shim, had to wait a week for the shim to arrive because I wasn't getting good contact for cooling.
