Either would be fine.

As Hal says, either will work fine but the "PE" chipset is the newer of the two and supports the new Hyper Threading P4s.

the reason i ask is that i am looking for a Mobo to get for some as part of a build for a p4 system. I pretty much got all the other parts. I am trying to keep the price low to compete with premade p4 pc's. this is what i have now

ENLIGHT Model# EN-72500AZ (BEIGE) ATX MID-TOWER CASE w/ 300Watt POWER SUPPLY - RETAIL

Lite On 48x24x48 CDRW Model LTR-4824S OEM

VANTEC's STEALTH SF8025L

Teac 1.44MB 3.5 Inch Floppy Drive # FD235HFC291 - OEM Version

Seagate 40GB 7200rpm EIDE Hard Drive OEM Barracuda IV ST340016A

Logitech Deluxe Access 104 Keyboard - RETAIL

US Robotics USR5610B 56K V.92 Internal PCI Performance Pro FaxModem Data/Fax Only (No Voice) - RETAIL

KDS 17" XF-7T XFLAT Monitor Retail

ASUS Motherboard for Intel Pentium 4 Processors, Model #P4GE-V/L

Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical Blue - RETAIL

Intel Pentium 4 2.4BGHz 512K 533MHz CPU Northwood P478 Processor Retail Box

The total comes to $850.00 with 512mb pc2700 ddr ram from crucial. He wants something he can upgrade later on so the pc will last a long time. He also wants onboard sound and video till he is ready to upgrade to a sound card and gaming video card. All he does is office work and surfing the web. He really doesnt know how to use a pc so i am going to show him what he can do with a good pc. He has his own landscaping business and i told him with a new pc, he can make really nice invoices and other things dealing with his business. right now, he has an IBM 350mhz K/500(no idea what the cpu is called). the HD in it is a old 5gb 5 1/4! Is the Mobo good or is there another option for a mobo with onboard sound and video that can be upgraded to a really good sound card and video card? sorry for the long post

Update for ya Ron. The motherboard in question does support hyperthreading which is why I suggested either would work fine.

Thanks for the help. It looks like he is still decideing on getting a Dell for $499 or having me build one for him. I hope he goes with me building one. I dont like that Dell he is looking at. It has a 1.7 Celeron in it. I would like for him to get a p4 but he will probably go with the Dell. Thanks again.

Here's a way to save some money and not impact on anything - look at the Intel D845GEBV2 motherboard (D845GEBV2L if you want onboard LAN) but make sure you get retail here and not OEM so you get everything you need with it. Same chipset as the Asus and around $40 cheaper, the only real difference is you can't overclock the Intel and it's got one less DIMM slot. Lose the Vantec fan - the single intake fan on the Enlight case is more than adequate for a P4 and if you want, you can move it to the rear exhaust port. Replace the 5610 modem with a USR 2976 or 2977 modem - those are OEM hardware modems and the 2976 even has voice. Get an OEM keyboard and mouse. Spend $6 more and get the WD400JB drive - it's got 8mb cache and a 3 year warranty.

Make sure he realizes that the 1.7 Celeron is a wimp and that Dell is not really upgradeable, the $499 box is all unitized and uses a micro ATX board and case with no expansion room. It has 3 PCI slots and *NO* AGP slot. By the time he specs out the Dell to the same specs as your build, it's gonna cost more and still be a dead end machine for upgrades.
