Not booting from a RAID Serial ATA setup

Just switched to that new ASUS P4G8X mobo. It has a RAID controller and serial ATA hookups. So I decided to splurge on a RAID setup of two serial ATA harddrives.

Well, got it all hooked up and everything seemed fine. Got the RAID array set up ok. XP installed. Then I realized I was booting from my CDROM drive rather than the RAID drive.

Went to the BIOS to switch the boot sequence, but I can't find a selection for the RAID array. It only lists the normal IDE choices (primary, secondary, etc.).

So anyone have any idea? Anyone else have this problem recently?

Try setting it to boot from SCSI.

Thanks Cricket, that works. As does booting from the "network device." Is there a difference between chosing "network device" or "scsi"?

Yeah, booting from the network device is for diskless workstations that do everything from a server.

Yeah, I know that. But chosing that manages to get my system to boot from the RAID device, just like the "scsi" selection. I'm a bit mystified why ASUS would chose to set up their bios this way and not have a seperate selection for a RAID boot.

So I guess my question is: Since I don't have either "scsi" or "network device," is there a difference in which one I chose?

SCSI is what you would choose. I haven't dealt with serial ATA yet, but if it's anything like the add in controller cards, the system sees anything that isn't using the IDE controllers onboard as SCSI.
