My Case Power Button

Whenever I go to start shutdown, and shutdown the computer, XP tells me "It is now safe to turn off your computer." I have to hold the power button in for like 7 seconds, and then the computer shuts off....I don't mind that as much as what happends next. Since I am holding in the power button, as soon as the computer shuts off and I let the power button go, the computer thinks I pused the button, and it starts the computer up again......So after I hear tha BIOS beep, I have to hit the power button and then it turns off....Any ideas on how I could fix this? I just want to let go of the power button without the computer starting up again...

Thanks...

If you need to look at my computer specs, check my signature.

mine use to do something similar, but it was a loose connection to the power button. kept "shorting" when i turned it off, so it would restart.

yea I know the problem too. I think for some it has to do with good timing. Although I think its not a good thing when people can't just use the start menu to actually turn off their computer (i mean TURN OFF, fans and all). It all has to do with your MoBo and how you have the power lead connected to the front panel ports.

Hi,

I remember covering this (sort of) in a previous post.

This has something to do with ACPI, but I am a sucker when it comes to remembering when I am about to to bed ( I work nites).

Perhaps 1 of the other guys can remember the thread?

It does have to do with ACPI but what to do about it depends on what OS you are using, and your hardware and bios need to be ACPI compliant.

Go into the BIOS and make sure "power management by APM" is enabled, then go into Control Panel, Power Options, look for an APM tab, and enable it. This will make the machine shut itself down instead of just sitting there at the "safe to shut down" screen.

You might also want to look around in the bios for the power button options - set it to "shut down" instead of 4 second delay.

It has nothing to do with ACPI.

Not exactly - it's just that I've been a computer technician for 10 years.
