What's missing from the picture are S-ATA storage devices. The first Serial ATA hard drives should be shipping within the next couple of months. However, it may be up to a year before the drives become widespread. Further, S-ATA optical storage drives are unlikely to arrive until sometime in 2003. Manufacturers of optical drives are in no hurry -- they don't need the added speed, and the low margins in that business makes transitioning interfaces a slow process.

what i found most interesting was that for the mean time anyway, current drives will have a fatser sustained speed
