I've finally found a need for one, so as with anything computers, I figured I would pole the waters here first.
Is Plextor still the king or are there some other brands that I should take a hard look at? Also, burning software, having only used a very old version of EzCD Creator (I think that is the right or close), which I found highly difficult to use, is that something that should help me decide on which drive to purchase or are they all about equal these days? IIRC, if I buy OEM I don't get the software with the drive, so is the burning software available commerically? Thanks Cirerrek

The Lite-On burners are extremely popular around here. Myself included. Even the OEM comes with Nero burning software which is also popular on this site. I have found it much easier to use than EzCD Creator.

Ah, yes, I have seen the Lite-On name mentioned a lot on the boards.
Okay, Lite-On + Nero added to the checklist. Thanks Brassman! Cirerrek |

Vote for Lite-On. Nero is a very intuitive and easy to use program.
One neat feature I JUST started using with Nero is the 'overburn' setting - this allows me to purchase and burn CDRs up to 870MBs / 99min !!! Good luck,

I agree to go with Lite-on, mine works perfectly. They are also less expensive than brands like Sony(usually).

For the money, Lite-On is good. I don't have one, but a few of my friends do, and they've never had problems.

Plextor still makes great drives but they are expensive. I have been using LG drives since late last summer and I think dollar for dollar they have the best product out there right now.

Looks like Lite-On will be on my A list.
Tuf, LG? Is that a different drive manufacturer or the Co that makes Lite-On drives? Appreciate the advice and recommendations! Thanks, |

LG is part of Philips...totally different company from Lite-On.
I use both Plextor and Lite-On CD-RW's...both brands work great. The Plextor's are able to rip tracks from music CD's faster than the Lite-On's though. But as far as burning CD's, they both perform the same...no problems. Cricket

LG is actually a Korean company and they do make cd burners. Philips also makes burners, but it is a European company and it is not affiliated with LG. Anyways...
Whichever drive you get, definitely use Nero. EZ Creator is a mess. |

I'm also a Lite-On fan. I've owned two of em, and the 48X12X48 I've got now, can't make a coaster... at least it hasn't yet. (knock on wood)

I have had great luck with both LiteOn CDRW's and LG DVD's drives and cannot complain about either of them.

Another vote for Lite-On. I have had really good luck with them, really reliable and our 48x burns a 700mb cd in 2.5 minutes.

Okay, okay, I get the picture
Lite-On it is. Found a nice retail boxed one at NewEgg for $50 + $6 for slow boat shipping.52x24x52 It and a black face plate one seem to be on sale. At that price I would have to guess DVD-RWs are coming on strong. Oh well, much cheaper to be a round or two behind the tech forefront. Thanks for the info and recommedations. I appreciate it. Cheers

LiteON or LG both represent extremely good value for money, and I have had no problems with either brand over the last couple of years.
Nero is best, takes a bit of learning but very fast and efficent.
