CD-RW Read Problem

I recently built a computer for a friend of mine and ran into this problem when I went to set it up at his home. Here are the details:

The Computer:
- Win 98 SE (Critical updates installed)
-Athlon XP 2000
-ECS K7S5A Pro mobo
-256 DDR PC2700 RAM
- BTC CD-RW Drive 52x24x52

I was considering upgrading his OS to Win XP Home Ed but this arrangement is a service trade and non-cash transaction -- I'm not willing to spend more of my money than I need to.

The issue:

The drive will not read data from any CD. It treats every disc like an audio disc and launches the CD Player, although no sound, music or otherwise is played. Looking at the drive in Explorer shows only "Audio CD".

Probable cause:

Prior to delivering the system, I loaded PC-Cillin (pack-in) and did a full-system scan. An infected file was found and quarantined. I deleted the quarantined file after trying to run a fix. It is only after I did this that I believe the problem started.

I don't remember the name of the file and I am wondering if I need to remove the drive from the Device Manager and reload the driver.

Any suggestions?

Try scanreg/restore. If that doesn't work try the system file checker. If all else fails since it is a new install just install 98 back over itself.

Doesn't your scanner make a log of what it deletes?

Thanks for the suggestions. Reloading Win98 is my last resort but I will certainly use the System File Checker and ScanReg.

I went back into PC-Cillin to find the log but could not find one -- probably because its a pack-in and not a full featured version(?).

UPDATE:

I ran the System File Checker and found a file that needed to be restored, unfortunately it required the use of the CD drive that is not functioning.

The registry checked out. I removed the CD drive from the Device Manager and rebooted. The system found the Win98 disc that I had left in the drive so I thought everything was okay. I put in a data disc and found that the problem was still there and now it wouldn't read the WIN98 disc when I put it back in.

I repeated my steps to remove the drive from the Device Manager and when it found Win98, I ran the SFC again and restored the file that was needed. Rebooted, placed a data disc in and cussed -- problem was still there.

I decided to punt and reloaded the OS. When it finished, I tested and found everything working normally.
