very SLOW modem

am in hotel..have toshiba Libretto 9P100/32 ram-win95b) with Megahertz 56K modem---connects at approx 37K but downloads are so slow as to render the computer useless--i estimate download speeds r in vicinity of <100 cps!!! Modem is properly installed and tests OK in control panel>modems etc.

I tried resewtting modem to lower speed (transmission and receive)..no help---did 'ping" test and get traveltimes of approx 560ms to various test sites (very slow).

Hotel phone line is quiet and has good volume for regular telephone calls.

any suggestions?? I suspect switcher issues in the neighborhood

the last time i tried to access, windows shut down indicating "protection error" on BSOD.

This machine worked perfectly at home base prior to trip (naturally!!).

Hotel phones go through any number of switches, switchboards, and other pair gain things, as well as innumerable A to D conversions. I'm surprised it will even connect.

Disable V.90 and let it connect at 28.8 or so, see if that helps.
