Master? Cable Select?

Hey Guys, I just finished building my first computer system about 4 months ago and it is running fine.
  • 350W PS
  • Asus P4PE Motherboard
  • P4 1.8A
  • SimpleTech 266Mhz 256MB RAM
  • Maxtor 40GB ATA133 HD
  • Saphire 128MB AGP card
  • Creative CD
  • 19" KDS flat screen monitor
  • Win XP "Home" (OEM ver.)

Here's a question I really could use help on, when I was intially building my computer, I could never get a 20 Gig Western Digital HD to get reconized in BIOS. I had the jumpers set to "master" but I could never install Win XP so I went out and bought a 40 Gig Maxtor HD and got Win XP install but I left the jumper at the default setting which was "Cable Select" Is it okay to leave the jumper set to Cable Select as I'm only running one HD? The Maxtor instructions said it's best to leave it set to Cable Select but I'm thinking that they mean if you're running 2 HD's-I don't know. My PC is running fine but I don't want anything to happen bad in the future. I haven't been "into" PC's for awhile since I got it running so please excuse me if something sounds wrong. Much thanks in-advance.

Yes, leave it as cable select. On the 80 wire cable, put the drive on the end connector, that assigns it as a master.

LoL - So thats what cable select meant? If you attatch it at the end of the IDE cable, you have selected it as the master, andif one is in the middle it is slave? Am I right on that? LoL - I am so newb

That's probably why the Western Digital didn't work - if you set it to CS I bet it will work just fine.

WD's have one gotcha - if it's the only drive on the cable, jumpering it to master will *NOT* work - if you don't use CS you have to completely remove the jumper.

avx - that only works with 80 wire cables - 40 wire needs master/slave jumpering.

Thanks glc, I kinda figured that was the reason why I couldn't ever to get it to be recognized..lol. I've been meaning to add it in the system(with the jumper set to CS)since I got going but wanted to be sure I had the right jumper setting on the current drive in it now. Thanks HAL, glc.
