can't reformat slave HDD

Howdy, First a BIG thanx to Pc Mech and all on the forums for the info I've gained over the last few weeks. Instead of buying another overpriced Gateway system, I had the guts to assemble my own. Based on some of your recommendations, I used the following: My old Gateway case (ATX Midtower),floppy, and Toshiba DVD, new ASUS P4PE/L Mobo,Antec SL350 pwr supply, 2.4Ghz P4, Kinston 512 DDR333 PC2700, WD 80GB Caviar HDD, Liteon 52x24x52 CD-RW, XP Home, ATI Radeon 7500, and the SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum Sound Card I had previously installed in the Gateway. Already had an almost new 17" CRT and Keyboard. Gateway had replaced them just before the 3yr warranty ran out! Also had a Logitech cordless mouse. Also replace my printer and scanner, and returned my cable modem to Comcast since I got my own Netgear unit and Netgear router. It was a busy weekend. The good news is, it works great. Only one problem which is on the attached message I sent to Western. Ideas?? I built a new system using a WD80Gb Caviar special edition as Master and my old Gateway 13.2Gb as slave. The system has run fine and I have been able to transfer all the files I want from the Gateway HDD to the new unit. Both are configured as CS but my BIOS has them listed as above (master & slave). The new HDD is partitioned c,d,e,f,& i. The old Gateway unit is listed as j. When I try to format the j drive (the 13.2Gb Gateway), I get a screen that says the drive is being accessed by a program or disk monitoring. I've shut down my virus software and all running programs that come up on startup and the problem still persists. Any suggestions? Again, the objective is to format the Gateway (j) drive in order to remove all data and make it available for storage.

persistence pays. Found a way to reformat my old drive in the slave position. Computer Management on XP allows you to force a reformat even tho the drive is reporting to be active. Hopefully, this won't create any other system problems. Once it's done, I'll send you a link to where I found the answer.

It worked! Found a link to Microsoft knowledge base in an old article at PC Magazine. Here's the link if you're interested. http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us;309000#5

Could you repost that link, Panama Red.

The original isn't working.

Thanks.
