Toshiba Satellite Notebook won't boot... HDC Error

I have an old Toshiba Satelite laptop from about 98 and it broke down about a year ago so I got a desktop. Anyway, my wife could sure use a laptop for her class to record grades and scores.

I was thinking I could revive this old thing.

The unit displays "HDC error" on startup. It doesn't boot at all. I put in a win2K disk to try to run setup and it says "can't run setup, there is no Hard Drive located on this computer". So I assume I have a bad hard drive or hd controller. The computer also makes a klunking/knocking sound that sounds like the HD is bad. How can I find out what's wrong exactly? Also how much would a laptop HD cost? I'll only need something small to run word and excel. Maybe a couple Gigs is all I need.

Any way I can revive this thing? Everything else works perfectly, it has a good screen, disk drives, battery, etc...

I did a search on newegg and turned up zilch, but found www.harddrives.com , they sell Notebook HD's...Im sure it can be revived...If all it is, is the HD. I would check Toshiba's website and finf out some more specs so you dont end up with the wrong HD or anything.

I hope it helps

The thing you have to be careful of here is, that the Controller on the M/B is still functioning. (Usually part of the southbridge chip).

If you can try and borrow a HDD, to make sure that all is OK M/B side, if it is go ahead and replace the drive.

If not, then I would send the sys to sys heaven.

I picked up a 1.4 Gig drive off ebay and the machine is fine now. It has been revived! Turns out my HD was bad.

Now I just need a 64M stick of RAM for this machine and maybe a larger HD.

Anyone have an extra laptop DIMM and or HD they want to sell?

The Kingston PN is KTT650/64 but I will accept any reliable brand.

And any HD at least 2-3Gigs should do fine for my needs.

BTW, it's a Toshiba Satellite 325CDS.
