AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz T'bird - Buy?

Hi all

Please help, where can i buy a 1.3Ghz or 1.4Ghz AMD Athlon Thunderbird cpu?.

I cannot find them anywhere......except from the states and they seem reluctant to send them accross the pond.

It seems very difficult to get anything less than 2Ghz now.....

Ideally from a uk company / website but anywhere that will ship to the uk will do.

Any help will be appreciated

Go for the 1.7 Ghz T-bird! Legend has it that you can OC it to 3.5 ghz! (some of you know what im talking about.)

The links you gave are for Thoroughbred and palomino cpu's I need the "Thunderbird" architecture - up to 1.4ghz for my aging motherboard.

Or am i missing the point and architecture does not matter....?

As far as i can tell Athlon XP or MP are not suitable.....

I don't know if they will ship internationally, but I found an Athlon 1300 Thunderbird for under 40 dollars at www.newegg.com -

Then again, I was trying to resurrect a dying system and decided that in the long run it was easier and more cost-efficient to buy a new motherboard and processor and memory - Asus board, Crucial Memory and Athlon Thoroughbred for under 200 dollars.

What motherboard do you have? You may be able to upgrade to an XP with a BIOS upgrade.

XPs are backward compatible with 98% of mobos... why not a 1700+ or 1800+? Even if your mobo does show the "friendly" name of 1700+ on boot up, it should still run OK; I've done it a few times myself. If your mobo is only a 100 fsb unit, then the XP will just clock down. Which mobo do you have?

I assume it will not post (if that is the term) if the cpu is not compatible? However would it damage either?

It might be the way forward to try and see, if it does not work I could put it on a new mobo.......

Not familiar with that brand of mobo... I tried searching for it, but didn't find any spec sites in English. I believe it's a VIA KT133a mobo, yes? Can't guaranty it for that brand, but I have had no problems in the few times I've stuck XPs into VIA 133 and 133a mobos.

My ABIT KT7A took an XP with just a BIOS upgrade. That is why I suggested it. I can't seem to find info on your board either but maybe someone will find it. Good luck by the way.

Hey card, perhpas you should try to download belarc advisor and maybe that will give better info on exactly what chipset you have in that thing. It is worth a shot.

I stuck a 1600+ in a KT133A-based board, and it ran fine.

This is the first release note for this bios:

1.AMD Athlon XP 2100+(0.18Micron but must be made ECN), if not just could support to Athlon XP 1600+.

It's hard to understand the fine Chinglish, but that tells me it WILL take a 1600+ Palomino core. I believe that "ECN" is "Engineering Change Notice" but I don't understand what this entails - maybe the actual circuit board revision level or something like that.

Finding a XP 1600+ is also tough, you may have to go to Ebay UK, there's 3 of them up there right now.

thanks for that, I will post an update when i have resolved it. (I am going to try the XP1600+, if that does not work i will flash the BIOS and if that does not work get a new mobo.....
