Laser printer
Hi all,
I'm planning on aquiring a laser printer this summer to serve as printer for my whole network. The problem is that I don't have a lot of money to spend on one. Given that, what are some good refurbished, used models to look at it? I've been told the HP 4 Laser printer is pretty good. Do you think I could obtain a refurbished laser printer for under $150? It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest. TIA. |

I just replace my LJ 1000 with a Brother HL-1450. It works great but draws 7.8amps.
For $200 brand new it can't be beat

How does Brother's quality compare to HP? Are they reliable? TIA.

It works a lot better than the HP over the network. The HP was USB only and kept locking up the server. This one is parallell and ethernet capeable, havent had a lock up yet. The HP only had 1mb ram, This came with 2mb and i have added 16 more for 18 total, it made a difference for large files. The HP was 600 dpi res, this is 1200 dpi and a lot better quality.

Neither one of those are designed to be a network printer, they are "personal" lasers. The 1000 is a "winprinter" like most inkjets.
Brothers are remarkable printers for the price, but they don't last like HP's, and when they do p00p out they are not really repairable - I've talked to professional printer techs and most of them won't touch them. Apparently it's difficult and costly to get service parts for them, it's cheaper to throw it in the trash and buy a new one. They also use separate toner cartridges and drums. |

Thanks guys. I think I'll try to take a closer look at HP4, and see if I can find a good deal on a refurbished on or on ebay.

I have one on the bench right now, tore it all apart to clean it,
if it works after I get it all put back together, I will let you know what I think of it tomarrow, might even think about selling it , if it works perfect, otherwise the scrap bin it goes. |

I've seen Laserjet 4's go over a million pages on the counter with nothing but cleanings, fuser kits, and rollers.

thanks for the reply glc,
found the problem, the lines were on the paper as it came out from the toner cart, before it got to the fuser, so I gussed it had to be something in the laser beam interfering with the write to the image drum, after many hrs cleaning and checking everything it the light path, and reading the book on how the printer works. I found a mirror mounted upside down above the toner, it run the full length of the page and was held on with two screws, so I removed it and walla, it had some toner on it that was doing it, cleaned it all off and put it all back together, works like new now. thanks ps it is my first repaire of a laser printer Last edited by bailey; 05-09-2003 at 05:25 AM. |
