Nice article Adaptec begins work on SAS with several companies
Says transfer rates several times faster than original SCSI... and you can use SATA devices on the same channel!! Quote:

This is gonna have to be an integrated controller, though. SCSI has already reached the bandwidth limits of the current PCI bus.
