What are some decent combo units? What should I look for in them?

I personally don't like combo units of any kind. If one function quits then you loose all functions if you have to put in shop for repairs.
That said, I realize many people like them for a variety of reasons, mainly savings on real estate. Main thing to avoid in my opinion is getting one that doesn't have a flatbed scanner. I have a friend that got a all-in-one unit without fully thinking thru uses. His uses the same sheet feed to scan that the fax uses. As a result he cannot scan a page from a book or pamplet. Chas

I like the HP "PSC" series, a particularly good deal is the discontinued PSC-750, you can find refurbs out there for under $100. Its a USB-only printer/flatbed scanner/copier (no fax) that uses last year's standard inkjet cartridges, not the new dinky cartridges that also want you to pull the black cartridge and drop a photo cartridge in for best photo printing.

I did the same, Confused. Big mistake to not get flatbed, although those type combos weren't as prevalent when I got mine about 4 yrs ago.
FF, I've used an HP OfficeJet 4 in 1 fairly rigorously for those 4 yrs with no problems (other than the lack of flat scan and the ocassional ink-smearing difficulties). I'm looking into a flatbed HP version (the D35 I think) which has gotten decent reviews on the sites I've checked. |

Thanks guys. The fax feature isn't necessary for me. I just basically wanted the scanner & printer.
glc, I'll be sure to check out that series.

ForceFlow> HP just dropped the price of the PSC1210 Printer/Copier/Scanner down from 149.99 to 99.97.
The unit is really compact and will fit in a normal printer sized area. Scanner can only handle 8.5 x 11 pages but that is ok for most things. CompUSA, Target, and OfficeMax all have this same price. For CompUSA go to the website and select in-store pick-up to reserve one. http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...765-90766.html |

Do note that the 1210 uses the dinky cartridges though.

I couldn't tell one cartridge from another listed in specs.
![]() What would be some good, but inexpensive cartridges then? |

The PSC750 uses the #15 black and the #78 color. The #15 lists for $30 and holds 25ml of ink. The #78 lists for $35 and holds 19ml of ink.
The PSC 1210 uses the #56 black, it lists for $20 and holds 19ml of ink. Hmm - this actually compares well. Color options are as follows - #28 is $22 and holds 8ml, #57 is $35 and holds 17ml. This does not compare well. |

I picked up a HP PSC-750 a couple of months ago for $150. Wal-Mart had it for $99 last week. I love it, nice text printing, great color, and even real nice photo prints. The copy function doesn't require the PC to be on. I havent used the scanner function very much, but it seems to do a good job. I think the 2110 is going for $150 now. I would highly recommend it.

Nothing wrong with a Lexmark, except their attitude - putting chips into the ink cartridges to try to prevent refilling and then suing 3rd party cartridge makers is not the mark of a company I want to deal with, even though I don't personally refill cartridges or buy 3rd party ones.
