Unhappy CD-R/RW possessed by evil spirit

My CD-R/RW has suddenly started ejecting the tray (in and out several times) by itself, and trying to auto play a CD that is not there. While it is doing this, sometimes I can't type or move the cursor either.
I have done a virus scan, a system restore, updated the software (Roxio), updated the driver, uninstalled/reinstalled the CD drive. I have a Compaq Presario Pentium 4, 1.70 GHz, 512 MB. The drive is a factory install.
Would anyone have any suggestions about what to do next?

Thanks,
Kathy

Sounds like a drive failure to me - do you have another drive to test with, or another machine to test your drive in?

Yep sounds like a drive failure, however if there is another optical drive on the same cable it might be that drive that is having the problem, even if you can read disks with it. So if this is the case unplug the other drive first to see if the CD-RW drive returns to normal operation

Yes, I also have a DVD rom on the same machine. I will do the unplug first, then test in the other machine if that doesn't do the trick.
Thank you,
Kathy
