Maxtor 3000LE goes Not Accessible

I have a 120 gb external drive on a USB2 adapter card. When I boot up the drive works fine. I can access data and edit files perfectly. As long as I am using the drive all is good. If I stop using it for a while, and later go back to use it, I get a dialog saying "G:\file is not accessible. A device attached to the system is not functioning." AND, sometimes I get a Blue screen, "Unable to write to drive G:" If I unplug the power connector to the drive, and plug back in, the drive pops up in explorer and all works fine until I let it rest for a while. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I have tried to replace the driver with a Maxtor, but it always reverts back to a Windows driver.

Using: 98SE PIII550 Please help,

Check your power management settings - don't allow hard drives to go off line or allow the system to go into standby.
