Volcano 9

I just bought a volcano 9 for my Athlon XP 2700 and I noticed that it says it is for an XP 2600+ or lower. I know it will work on an XP 2700 but I need to know if it will be louder than the retail fan.

PS: Do you know of any good guides to installing a volcano 9 (and removing the old heatsink).

You shouldnt have any problems. Yeah they are loud. I have a Volcano Thermal Take and I run my fan speed pretty high just to be safe. You can adjust the speed to whatever you think will be safe and help cut out the sound by doing that.

And they are very easy to install. Just stick it on there!! :-)

If the Volcano 9 has a speed adjustable fan, try running the fan at it's slowest setting and check your temps as you use the computer. If the computer runs stable and doesn't lock up or freeze and the fan noise is reasonably low, I'd leave it like that. You can always run the fan at it's highest setting just to see what kind of temp difference there is...but as long as the computer runs stable, you're doing good.

I'm going ahead with the volcano 9, but I'm having a problem. I dont know how to take off the retail heatsink. I dont want to put to much pressure on it, for fear of breaking something.

Its alot easier than it seems to remove the stock one. Just wait till ya try and slap on the Volcano. Just make sure you got the proper tools cause shes a tough one.

Also, how much pressure should I put on the clips?

If ya dont have the proper tool just insert a screwdriver in the slot and push down and out away from the heat sink. Theres only one slot on the bracket so you cant go wrong. Make sure the HSF power is disconnected from the motherboard. To make it easier remove the fan from the HS first then remove the HS. good luck

No luck. There is not enough room in the case to slide even a tiny scrw driver into the slot, so I tried pushing the screw driver against the clip to bend it outwards. The Clip wont budge. I gave up after the mobo started to bend.

Is there a way I can take the whole prosessor out of the case?

Remove the motherboard from the case and place it on a hard surface (like a tabletop). That way, the motherboard will be supported and won't bend so much and you'll have lots of room to work with.

yeah take the mobo out first and set it on a hard surface, then find a flat head screwdriver. If you have a screwdriver that's socketed so you can change the bits out, that will work even better because you don't have to worry about it slipping. Just put some pressure on it and push away from the heatsink.

I have the same I had to loosen the psu and moved it out of the way then I could use a screw driver with ease.
it was a lot easier than removing the mobo. if you can.
I ran mine full tilt and yes it's load but if you remove the grill and replace it with some thing with less restriction it's quieter.
before you replace heatsink clean old paste completely, and reapply new paste.

On the Thermaltake site it says it supports up to 2800+ and on other sites it says up to 2600+? What the heck?

The box says up yo 2600+, which is what most sites go by. Personally, I trust the thermaltake website to be more accurate.

I finally got the heatsink off and cleaned the cpu core. Is there any trick to taking the CPU out or do you just grasp the edges and pull it directly out?

Move the ZIF lever on the side of the socket to the up position, grab CPU by the edges and lift straight up.

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed in the tempertaure sensor. When I hooked it up and booted the computer, it was louder than the retail fan (before the retail fan starting making a grinding noise). I tried the manual mode which is a lot better. I put the fan on a very low setting and it makes very little noise.

Right now, while I'm just on the web, my CPU temp. is hovering at about 45C (according to my mobo program). I know this is fine, but how much can I expect the temp. to raise, while playing Counter-Strike? Is there an easy way to measure it?

You should be able to play games for a little bit and then exit them to look at your temp. Or run your temp or mobo program while playing the game and you and ALT+TAB the game to a window in the taskbar and check it that way. Pretty sure that is how I used to do it.

I tested the die temp. right after CS and it was 51C. All in all, the Volcano 9's pretty sweet. Consider thiis thread closed.
