2nd hard drive config
I am trying to add a 2nd hard drive to my computer and would like to have windows 98 on one drive and xp on the 2nd drive. Having trouble setting up to get a boot menu to choose which drive to boot to. I know it is possible....both drives have the os installed..do I need to reinstall the xp drive and choose something other that c: drive to get a boot menu? or have the 98 drive on the master instead of slave? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Spec of system doesn't seem to be the issue but can supply that if necessary, didn't think that part would be an issue, 1 month old system. Both drives recognized in bios and the xp just auto boots but lets me access the other drive with win98, just would like the option to boot to 98.

Normally to get a dual-boot system (and you want each OS a different HD) you would install Win9x first on the Primary Master and then XP on the Primary Slave. When XP installs it will put essential boot files onto the root of the Win9x C: partition.
It is these files which enable the dual-boot choice you want. I think your easiest option is to make the Win98 HD the Primary Master and the XP drive Primary Slave (for simplicity) then boot off the XP CD-Rom and do an overlay (Repair) install of XP. This will reinstall XP over itself without affecting your data. In the process of reinstalling XP, it should recognise Win98 and install the boot files onto the root of the Primary Master C: An even easier option is to purchase this very inexpensive Boot Manager, install it, and it will allow you to boot into as many OS as you want. http://www.osloader.com/ HTH |
