Need help cause im an idiot.

Ok first off sorry for bringing my idiot self here. Ok I really wanna upgrade my computer and Ifigured the best way would be to go with a new motherboard and processor. Well the real reason i wanna upgrade is because of swg. I need an athlon 1500 or higher motherboard combo and since my old soundcard and videocard are onboard im gonna need a new video and soundcard. I could care less about the soundcard but I need atleast a geforce 3 ti 64mb card.See buying the motherboard is the thing im worried about because I dunno what cases and fans I need to include with it if any,I kean a have a fan for my old comp so do I need to add a new one? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi dwayneeckert, welcome to PCMECH

Dont worry about dumb questions here, its been said before and I say it again..The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked

Ok, first off, Any particular reason you want to go AMD? Or is an Intel buil ok aswell?

Second, whats your budget?

Third, have you has any experience building a comp, or will this be your first time? What computer do you currently own? What do you want to do with your new system?

Well right now im running a celelron processor(dont know mhz or motherboard) but I know I got a rage 128 somthing onboard and my sounds also onboard. I would like my new setup to be sdram usable too if possible and my budget is about 200 I could prolly go over a little bit but nothing over 225 if possible. I want my comp to be able to run star wars galaxies which is the main reason for my upgrade.

I know, but the reason I ask is because, a lot of store bought computers come with very proprietary hardware...particularly Compaq and HP, and Dells.

Another reason is because that is an ATX board, and if your current case is a AT or Tower, or even a Micro AT, it most likely wont fit in your case.

If you could find out a make and model we could narrow down what you have to do here...

That is a very tight budget, it might work though. I looked this up on www.newegg.com:

-ANTEC SOLUTION SERIES MODEL SLK1600
-Speeze CPU Fan Model 5F263B1M3
-AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred /266 FSB Processor CPU 1700+/ 1.47GHz -OEM
-ECS K7S5A PRO
-ATI RADEON 8500LE 64MB DDR

This all comes out to $218, without shipping.

Now, there are two problems you will run into:

1) Shipping might put you over budget .
2) You will need an operating system since your store bought machines copy won't work. This is about $90.

So you might need to save a little more money before a decent upgrade is possible.

Nope, board is an ATX, yours is Micro ATX...As far as I know that wont fit...but I dont know everything.

But you can get a good case at your local computer store or expo for like 20 bucks..

Hey, Just butting in here but dont trash your old parts, keep them lying around you may never know when you need. Some were down the road you may find a function for them!

Also becareful of buying a cheap comp case. I did so my self and I had to buy a power supply because the cheap case had a cheap powersupply that could not handle my parts. Look for a case with at least a 300 watt powersupply, If you cant tell then just ask. Good luck... should be fun..

I hate to disappoint you, but your Gateway sdram will not work in either the MSI or ECS boards that have been mentioned - they require PC133 and yours is most likely PC66, and speced for an Intel motherboard. You are in a poor situation for upgrades - Gateway uses a lot of proprietary parts.

You will need a case, motherboard, processor, ram, and video card at the very least. Most motherboards come with usable onboard sound these days. You can probably reuse all your drives and peripherals.

Here's the cheapest I'd consider - and all prices are from Newegg including shipping:

AOpen Model# QF50A (Beige) ATX MID - TOWER CASE w/ 300W ATX HIGH EFFICIENCY POWER SUPPLY - $49.00

Asus A7N266-VM AA (AMD Assured Version) NVIDIA nFORCE 220 Chipset 266/200MHz FSB Motherboard Micro ATX- Retail $71.99

AMD Athlon XP 1700+ Thoroughbred /266 FSB Processor CPU 1700+/ 1.47GHz -OEM $44.00

Speeze CPU Fan Model 5F263B1M3 for AMD/Intel Socket A/370 $12.00

CRUCIAL MICRON 256MB 32x64 PC 2100 DDR RAM - OEM $31.99

The motherboard has onboard GeForce 2MX graphics - less than what you want but better than the Rage 128 you have now. The cost right now is at $205, within your budget - and you can hold off on a better video card till you can save up another $100 or so for an ATI Radeon 9100 or a GF4 Ti4200.

This also doesn't address an operating system - but if your hard drive has Win98SE or newer on it, it can be made to work - note that this motherboard and Win98 original do not get along well together, but everything should work except the onboard sound.

Considering the geforce 2mx will most likely not be able to run the game at all.
