New Motherboard Which CPU Cooler
I ordered an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. What kind of CPU COOLER can I get that works well and will fit on the motherboard? This is to replace the Asus A7V266-E that I am currently using. I found that the old motherboard is incompatible with Windows XP which I ordered and can not install on the old motherboard. According the Microsoft HCL the Asus A7V266-E is not compatible with WinXP! I really want to get away form the dreaded VIA display problems on the old board.
I also may get some memory eventualls. I have 2 sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR: 1-128 1-256 Actual speed of the memory is not that important. If I buy new I will probably buy PC2700. I dont really want to run DDR400. Absolute speed is not important. I want a Cooler which is not too loud but cools. I dont really want to use a cooler that has to have bolts going thru the motherboard, but that is not a total impossibility if this MB support that. The cooler should cool but not make too much noise. I could easily settle some place in the middle between noise and cooling. Case Enlight Mid-Tower. 1 8CM Exhaust fan (Enlight Adjustable fan) I could add an intake fan. The original one that came with the case quit working. I plan on using 2 hard drives 1 CDROM 52X 1 CDRW Processor- Undecided may try old 1.2 Gig Athlon. (non-xp), I might buy a newer processor, but I dont have much cash to blow. I think the cooler I have now is a volcano 5 it is on the noisy side and the clip is kind of large. I am considering doing a mod on the cooler and use a scoop that goes from 6 cm to 8 cm that fits on top of the fins and then put a simple 8 cm fan on it. Is this a viable option to increase the airlfow without making more noise? If I do this I would need a cooler that uses standard 6 CM fans that can be connected with screws and removable. A simple oversized fan is nice too if there are coolers with oversized fans. Any suggestions you have are fine. Just fire away. Links to more recent cooler reviews or websites would be nice. Whatever you use that works is a good option. |

Looks good if you choose a cooler with no phase change material then you will also have to buy thermal paste such as Arctic Silver 3. Also look at the Cooler Master, Vantec and Thermaltake.

The Vantec Aeroflow #VA4-C7040 is a great HSF. Zero problem with fit on the A7N8X Deluxe.

I have been using the Speeze FalconRock on the last 10 or so builds I have done. It is really quiet and keeps the temps down really well. Just don't let the $9.00 price fool you, it is of quality material and construction.
If there is one thing this HSF proves it is that all the others are over-priced. |
