HELP! P3 CPU & Motherboard problem
Now i thought I knew a thing or too but im stuck now. My sisters computer went tits up when she got some sort of error, so just turned it off at the power! the thing now turns on, but nothing appears on the screen, ive tested most things using an old computer i have, and figured that the CPU needed replacing. shes got a P3 450, so i got hold of another one of them. Just fitted that today & it still doesnt work, but when i put a pentium 2 CPU out of my older computer into it, it works fine. (her motherboard supports slot 1 P2 & P3) Now i guess both the P3 processors I now have could both be broken, but im pretty sure the one i just got should work, although i have no other machine to test it on. anyone know whether the motherboard in her computer could have broken in some way, meaning that it will only run P2 CPUs now? i didnt think that was likely but cant think of an explanation. i have been told it could be the voltage regulator something! can this be fixed. its a daewoo cb648x-bx mtherboard by the way, and intel pentium 3 450mhz processor. if anyone could help id very much appreciate it.

sorry for being stupid but how do i do that. isnt the bus 100 on the p2 & p3s i have. also, do u know if the voltage is different between the two? i think they are both 2.0v, but i dont even know if thats that relevent voltage level or if thats something completely different.

on the voltage i wouldnt mess with it unless your trying to overclock it, look on the mobo and there is a jumper to set the front bus... what type of mobo do you have?

no, not trying to clock it, just fix it! i cant see why the jumper would be set wrongly, as it was used before with a p3 and worked fine until this problem. thats why i thought it'd just need a new cpu. its a daewoo cb648x-bx board, think it has the intel 440bx chip on it.

no one messed with the bios. she turned it off at the power as she didnt know what else to do! since then it never did anything, when its switched on nothing appears on the screen, i have tested every component i can using an older computer that i have. when i used the p2 cpu out of that computer hers worked, so i assumed that if i got hold of another p3 for her it would be back to normal, but neither of the p3 work in it, but the p2 does!

ok. well its unlikely this new p3 cpu i got hold of doesnt work, even if the old one does. and the mobo works fine with the p2 cpu so it cant be completly shot. which is why i thought it may be something on the board that a p3 requires has broke, but its still possible to run p2s. didnt know if this was a common occurence.

Clear the CMOS and try the P3 again. To clear the CMOS, you can either find the CLEAR CMOS jumper and with the system unplugged from the wall outlet set the jumper to the CLEAR position for 5 minutes. Then reset the jumper to the NORMAL position, plug the system back in and boot it up.
Or you can unplug the system from the wall outlet and remove the motherboard battery for 5 minutes. Since that system is pretty old, replace the battery with a new one. Plug the system back into the wall outlet and boot it up. If you still get nothing from the system, remove the motherboard from the case and follow this troubleshooting guide: Out of case troubleshooter. Make sure the cards are all inserted fully into their slots and all power connectors are tight. Try the system with the RAM or video card removed. When you boot it up, it should beep like crazy telling you something is missing (make sure the case speaker is connected if the motherboard doesn't have a piezo speaker on it already). If it does beep, the CPU and motherboard are probably fine. If it doesn't beep, one or the other might be bad. The P3 450MHz runs on the 100MHz FSB setting with the clock/multiplier ratio set to 4.5.
