tape drive: Master or Slave?

I am installing a new Seagate backup Tape-Drive on a WinNT system. I am connecting it to the secondary IDE controller, as suggested in the manual. I have a CD-Rom drive also on this controller, which is set to master, and I've set the Tape-drive to slave. All should be fine, but it isn't.

When I turn on the machine, it seems to combine a detection of both the CD-Rom and the Tape-drive. In windows explorer, the Seagate drive is detected, but it is detected as a CD-Rom! There is no detection for the CD-Rom drive.

I don't understand what is going on. I would try setting the tape as master instead of slave, however, the manual says don't do that. The manual also says do not connect the tape-drive to the same controller as the hard-drive. So I'm kinda stuck on options. Anyone have an idea?

Thanks!

You can hook the cd-rom with your hard drive. also what kind of cable came with the tape drive? (40pin or 80pin) if it's a 80pin then set both cd-rom and tape drive to cable select. putting your cd-rom with your hard drive is not the best way as it will slow down your hard drive, but it will work. also you did go into the bios and detect the new drive there first right?

The controller is 40-pin ... and you're right I would rather not connect the CDRom to the hard-drive controller.

No, I have not gone into the BIOS to detect the drive. Thanks for that suggestion, I'll give it a try.
