is it the only hard drive on the system, or is it one your adding to your system that already is running xp?
If it is a fresh install of xp, in the partition set up part of the set up, you should be able to delete the existing partition on the drive, the make a new one and format it. This will erase everything from the disk.. If your adding it on, then go to "my computer" and right click and go to format.... HTH |

Does that hard drive already have an existing OS on it? If it does, what OS is it?

it says it cannot be delleted in set up because it contains temp set up files and when i try to just format it says to quit all programs r2unning and to shut all windows showwing the drive but this seems impossible because format is a pr2ogram and a window

Sounds like you are trying to install XP from within another version of Windows. You can't do that, you have to boot with the CD and do the setup that way. All you can do from within Windows is install XP as an upgrade, you can't format.

You need to boot from the XP CD. The formatting will take place somewhere at the beginning of the Windows XP Setup procedure.

Well, then you're doing it wrong.
Try it again. Boot from the WinXP CD. Read the instructions on the screen and follow them. There will be a question where you deen to decide in which partition you want to install WinXP. Choose a partition. Then Setup will ask you if you want to format with FAT32 or NTFS or keep the settings. Choose NTFS and then the hard drive will be formatted. After that, setup continues. RJ |

Are you booting the computer with the XP install CD? Set the BIOS to boot from CD first and restart the computer with the CD in the drive.

Are you using a genuine Microsoft WinXP installation CD or a manufacturer's recovery CD?
