not finding my FDD
I am installing one item at a time on the bench before I install it all in the case.
I first was having monitor problems, I have have the monitor working. but my FDD is not reading. the light stays on all the time. I have double checked the red line making sure that it is at the number 1 pin. it is on both sides, Also the twisted part of the cable it closer to the FDD. I also tryed to reverse the cable. But with it notched it can only go in one way. I have installed another FDD, and it does the same thing, the light just stays on all the time and unable to read from drive A. Any suggestions? the only cause of this i know is the flopy cable on the wrong way roud eather at the motherbord socket or the drive

The end of the cable with a twist goes to the floppy and make sure that the red stripe goes on pin 1 on the board and floppy.

hi redo.
Yes I have double checked that also. I do have the twisted part of the cable toward the FDD, and the end at the motherboard can't go on but one way. and double checked the manual and it is at the number 1 pin. the side of the FDD I tryed both ways and still cannot find the FDD. |

in the bios is the flopy disk enabled and swap flopy drive disabled ?

Hi andy,
I just checked my bios. it has first, second , and third boot device. Floppy is first boot. I do have something else that says Floppy drive seek, and this is enabled. |

We need U to look right on the first page of your BIOS when U enter the BIOS, the same page with the time and date and your IDE devices. Usually right under time and date is flopy drive A: and B: and that is where U need to be sure thay are enabled...
Actually though now that I think on it, if it were disabled then the light would not just stay on, usually that IS as mentioned above caused by reversed cable..

Is the floppy (Legacy Diskette A or whatever your BIOS calls it) properly detected in the BIOS as 1.44Mb , 3.5 in drive? Legacy Diskette B should be set to None.
Also, check the any of pins on the Floppy Drive are not bent, because they bend very easily. If they are, just straighten them again with a flat screwdriver. It is also very easy to "offset" the pins by two and end up with only 31 of the 33 pins on the Floppy Drive covered by the connector. If necessary, power down, take the drive out of the case so you can see better, and then connect the Drive to the cable. Have you tried turning the floppy cable connector to the floppy drive upside down? If it's not the right way up, then that can cause the light to stay on. Try a different cable. HTH |
