Processors are classified by "types." Socket 370, 478,462 etc...

You then find a mobo that supports that type.

video cards can go with any motherboard and any processor as long as it has an open slot on the motherboard for the video card. Most common slot for video cards is the AGP slot, which is on almost all boards that are under 5 years old.

Socket 7 is for Pentium 1 processors
Slot 1 is for Pentium 2 and some Pentium 3 processors
Socket 370 is for Pentium 3 processors
Socket 423 & 478 is for Pentium 4 processors

Slot A is for AMD processors
Socket A or 462 is for AMD Duron, Athlon, XP, MP processors
Socket 754 is for AMD Athlon64 processors
Socket 940 is for AMD Opteron processors

There are different types of AGP slots also.

AGP 1.0 is for 3.3 volt AGP video cards and runs at 1X or 2X
AGP 2.0 is for 1.5 volt AGP video cards and runs at 1X, 2X, or 4X
AGP 3.0 is for .8 volt AGP video cards and runs at 8X
AGP Pro Slot is for AGP Pro video cards

3.3 volt AGP video cards cannot go into a 1.5 volt AGP slot and 1.5 volt video cards cannot go into 3.3 volt AGP slots. Most of the time the slots are keyed so that you cannot install the wrong video card in the wrong AGP slot. If a wrong video card is installed in the wrong AGP slot, it can damage your motherboard and or your video card. There is a Universal AGP slot that can accept both 3.3 volt and 1.5 volt AGP video cards. .8 volt video cards can be installed in 1.5 volt AGP slots and 1.5 volt video cards can be installed in .8 volt AGP slots. Although they will not work at their rated speeds. AGP Pro slots can accept any video card. But AGP Pro video cards cannot be installed in any other AGP slot.

Hope this clears things up a bit.
