Post Case Power and Video Card Power Requirements

OK... I just bought a PNY Technologies GeForce 4 Ti4200, 64 Mb DDR, TV-OUt and DVI.

I was looking at the box again before opening it, and it said it needed a 350 W power supply. I went to their website to double check - they say on the site 300 W.

I cracked open my case, and looked at the power supply (an EE MAV-250P) I did some net searching and found a site on it. The label and the web page said it was actually a 160 W Power Supply.

QUESTIONS:

1. Why is the power requirement for the new card so steep?

2. IS the power requirement for real?

2. If I put this card in my present case, will I be in for problems, or the 300/350 W requirement a CYA (Cover Your Ass) blurb from the company???

All I have in my case at present are the motherboard (ECS Mainboard K7S5A), two Fujitsu HDs (20 Gb @ 7200 RPM and 6.4 GB @ 5200 RPM),
A-Open Modem, and a 16X Pioneer DVD-ROM Drive. Besides the keyboard, I have a Intellimouse plugged in and either a Sidewinder game pad or a Saitek Cyborg 3D USB.

Thanks a bunch!

To be honest I am very surprised that you rig runs at all on the PSU, if it is indeed only 160w as that Athlon takes a fair drop of juice to run. If as I suspect you have a higher rated PSU, hopefully it will be around the 300w area.

If it is only 160w then I suggest that you budget for a good quality 300w+ PSU.

yes .. i plan on ugrading to a 400W power supply soon.. i dont even know if im taking full adavange of everything i can in my system with the 300W.

i would double check check the label again. check the net again.. i find shocking that you would have a 160W powersupply in there..

also... sorry for being stupid and not looking in your sig,, lol
