Dual Display Question

Hello all.

I have been looking at the ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 8500 cards for a new build I am thinking about.

I would like to have dual monitors on the new build at some point, but the AIW cards don’t seem to have more then one VGA/DVI connector. I can’t do a dual display without two connectors, right?

Can anyone suggest a way around this?

Could I put a second video card in a PCI slot for the second monitor?

Thanks.

Well, the card has two connections. A VGA and a DVI. If you have no DVI monitor then get an adapter. Sometimes they're even bundled with ATI cards (at least I have seen a ATI card with an adapter bundled).

From what I can tell by looking at the picture, the AIW 8500 has only one connector, allowing either a DVI or VGA connection.

Oh, I see. A DVI port with VGA adapter. Sorry, I thought it had two connections.

Would a PCI video card work for the second monitor?

What will you be doing that requires dual monitors? If it's not gaming related, take a look at the Matrox G550 video card...it supports dual monitors and has excellent 2D image performance.

If you still plan to go with the ATi All In Wonder, try to find a PCI Radeon video card (I still see them at CompUSA). Using 2 video cards was how it was done before the video cards came with 2 monitor ports already on them.

The first monitor will run off the AGP card and will be used for games. The second will just be for regular 2D Windows apps.

I’m not even sure if I want a second monitor yet. I’m just exploring my options for my next build.

I’ll look into the ATI Radeon PCI cards. Thanks Cricket!

I just built one using a Matrox Parhelia card. Very nice system but the card was $300 plus.
