CRT or LCD???
i finally built my college computer and all I am looking for now is a nice monitor. The problem is I don't know what kind I should get. Besides homework and studying, I'll be using my computer for some heavy gaming (upcoming DIII and HL2) and watching TV thanks to my TV Tuner. I know CRTs generally cost less and are suggested for gaming, but I don't think I can use such a big CRT monitor when I can get a very nice LCD monitor which is alot smaller and ways a lot less. I would go for the LCD because of its size but how would games and TV look through a LCD monitor?
Basically, what kind of monitor would you get if you were in my position? Also, anybody know of some good LCD monitors that work well with games and watching television? I am looking for a maybe a 17 inch but no less. |

Personally, I'd stick with CRT, simply because it costs so much less. But what's your budget? A good LCD will probably cost you upwards of $500, while my CRT cost me $120. If I had the money, I would probably switch over to LCD.

If space is a concern, definitely go with a LCD. HTH

How to Buy a Monitor
http://www.pcworld.com/howto/bguide/...,page,2,00.asp LCD v CRT "In general, graphic artists prefer CRT monitors because they show truer colors and greater nuance, whereas people who work mostly with text gravitate toward LCDs because pixels on an LCD have well-defined edges, resulting in sharply focused letters. Gamers prefer CRTs, too, because LCDs redraw their screens more slowly, and as a result, moving images can sometimes leave visible trails or appear blurry." |

Actually it's a personal decision. For me, no way to return to CRT again. The are more expensive indeed, but they have a sharper image, but on the other hand they have not such a good color saturation than a CRT.
TV images look good on y TFT, I myself have a TFT and a TV card. And DVDs look really great. Haven't had any problems with games. What is important is to keep the response time as low as possible for gaming (but be careful with the new 16ms TFTs, most of them have less colors to display. It's a trap, don't get them). Even with my 50ms panel neither my friends nor I myself could see any blur or ghosting on the panel, and some of my friends are heavy gamers with 19" CRTs. And some TFTs are as fast as 20ms already. If you can afford it a nice LCD with a 20ms response time should do the job.

Some suggest that games seem better on a CRT monitor.

For slightly over a year now I have been using a pair of KDS RAD-5 15" LCD's that supposedly have a response time of 25ms. I could not be happier with these screens. I watch movies and play games on them-- haven't seen any sort of ghosting yet. One of them developed a screen abnormality not too long ago. I called KDS, got an RMA number and shipped back the defective RAD-5. About 2 weeks after shipping the monitor off I received a replacement (note that took about a week to get to KDS via UPS ground). Great service by KDS and I'm very satisfied with these LCD's.

I got a 17" NEC LCD from my wife this past christmas and I will never own another CRT. My wife now uses my old 17" CRT and using that PC sucks now. If you can afford the extra money for an LCD do it and don't look back. Just my two cents.

I have had my 17" KDS Rad 7 for about a year now and love it, I play games, DVD's and do a little graphic work with it. I won't go back to another CRT. When the three CRT's that I have go out I'll replace them with TFT.
One other thing my migranes went away after two days of using the TFT, the refresh rates on a CRT would kill me no matter what is was set at.

I believe the only people who say "games run better on CRT" are people who saw a TFT a couple years ago and don't want to realize that they have been improved immensely.
So much for ghosting and TFT, it's a thing of the past, even other TFT users affirmed that ![]() TFT rules ![]() RJ |

I have never seen ghosting on my TFT and I thought it was a myth.

It appeared on the pure LC-Displays, in times back where LCs were not controlled by transistors, well and in the first times when TFT hit the market, but that's a long time ago.
I've seen such old LCDs. Move the mouse and you don't see it anymore, and when you stop moving the mouse search the pointer. Without mouse-track you were lost. . . Actually even CRTs ghost. Remember the old monochrome CRTs ? They ghosted a lot. Even today's CRT ghost, otherwise you'd only be able to see one single pixel on the screen ![]() RJ |
