Can't seem to get machine to pick up modem?
I have an older AMD K6-2 that had a working v90 modem that was removed. Added a different v90 modem, but now Win98 doesn't want to pick it up. The replacement modem worked OK on another machine. Any idea what the problem might be? Thanks.

Welcome to PCMech.
Try going to Control Panel/ Add New Hardware to add it. Did you remove the old modem from the Device Manager?

If it does not seem to pick it up then try installing it in a different PCI slot. Also did you make sure to install the drivers for the new modem? If all of the above does not work you may have a faulty modem. Install the modem in another machine and see if it is detected and works in the other machine.
1. If it does not work either then you have a bad modem, return the modem or exchange it for another one. 2. If the modem is detected by the other machine then we have a problem. Maybe the original computer is very picky and does not like that particular brand or model of that modem. If that is the case then purchase a different modem and that may solve your problem. |

K6-2's ...
Does it have MMX? If not, the new modem will never work. Period. You need a hardware modem, or external (not USB). |
